MBL Grease is an NLGI Grade 2, Extreme Pressure, Lithium Complex, Metal Based, Multi-Purpose Grease, with a very wide operating temperature range, exceptional load carrying capacity and good water and rust resistance.

Operating temperature

MBL Grease has an extremely wide operating temperature range from -40 degrees celsius to 280 degrees celsius. This means that this Grease is suitable for wheel bearing and hoist chain metal lubrication on forklift trucks, even in the chilly blast of ice cream freezing rooms. The temperature in these freezing rooms is usually about -27 degrees celsius. This Grease is still effective at the high temperatures experienced in vehicle disc brakes. (Refer to the comments regarding Grease compatibility). The maximum continuous temperature is 205 degrees celsius.

The micro-metallic particles dispersed throughout the MBL Grease are in the 1-10 micron range, and are initially spherical in shape, to act as microscopic ball bearings to reduce friction. They become deformed under heavy load, and plate into minor pits, scores and irregularities in the surface to be lubricated, providing a smoother wearing surface.

Loady carrying capacity

Consequently the MBL Grease is capable of carrying far greater loads than conventional and extreme pressure greases, once the particles have plated, with or without the lubricant film.

MBL Grease is far more durable than conventional greases, so much less grease is required, and usually the lubrication intervals can be extended significantly. This is a real time and maintenance cost saving, where multiple vehicles or machinery need to be serviced.

The Timken O.K. Load for this grease is an extremely high ASTM (D2509 25kg). The 4-ball EP Test (ASTM D 2596) shows a Load Wear Index of 40kg, and a Weld Point of 250kg. Unlike many metal based greases, MBL Grease is suitable for application in high-speed ball or roller bearings. Its Lubrication Life (ASTM D 3336), No 204 bearing at 10,000RPM, and 164 degrees celsius, is 290 hours.

Rust and oxidation stability

As with all greases, it is important to ensure that you have the correct base grease for the particular application. It is also important not to mix greases with incompatible bases. Please refer to the Technical Data Sheet for specific applications.

New Ball and Roller Bearings are coated with a preservative by careful washing in clean solvent, and then drying thoroughly before use. Under no circumstances spin the bearing/s, at high speed with a compressed air blast to dry the bearings as this practice can damage the bearing races. With used bearings, wash all traces of the old grease from the bearing/s and housing/s before loading the bearing/s with the correct quantity of fresh grease. Do not “Pack” the bearings and housing full of grease, unless the bearing will only be revolving very slowly. Shell Company’s lubrication guide advises that if a bearing and housing heats up after reloading, grease should be removed until the bearing runs at correct temperature. Remember that the bearing must squelch through the grease in its initial revolutions, and room must be allowed for grease displacement, and expansion under heat. Refer to Manufacturer’s specifications for the correct torque and seating procedure. Many bearings must be rotated under torque, then backed off a specified amount to provide the correct end-float, and locked.

If compatible greases are mixed or the grease becomes overheated, the lubricating oil can separate from the grease base sponge, and the bearing can fail from lack of lubrication.

Universal joints should not be lubricated with a high-pressure grease gun, as the seals can become dislodged, resulting in premature failure.
